SPECIAL EDUCATION REPRESENTING CHILDREN
WITH DISABILITIES IN NEED OF A FREE AND APPROPRIATE EDUCATION I am an attorney who represents children
with disabilities and their families in their efforts to obtain a free and appropriate education in
special education. I have successfully represented disabled children and their
families in the full range of arenas - in the local school, in the administrative
law context and in Court. I have participated in Committee on Special Education
Meetings, (CSE’s), the cooperative drafting of Individual Education Plans, (IEPs), and when necessary, Impartial Hearings and litigation in Federal Court
on behalf of disabled children and their families. We have been highly successful in assisting families place
their children in special education private schools at district expense.
Moreover, we have had success in litigating the issue of a district’s
responsibility to pay your attorney’s fees when we have been substantially
successful in litigation. Our experience has allowed us to develop a cooperative approach with school districts that often results in placement of disabled children in therapeutic private schools at the local school district’s expense. We employ a full range of expert professionals to help in this comprehensive process. We often rely on an expert neuropsychologist who is on staff at a major teaching hospital and is a consultant to the staff of a prestigious therapeutic private school. This neuropsychologist is able to provide test results that cannot be disputed by school officials. We also rely on an expert in special education who is a former special education teacher. She makes school visits to evaluate the disabled child for the purpose of providing her observations and for developing an IEP that is best suited for a child. In addition we have professional relationships with a speech and language specialist and a person who specializes in special education private school placement. We
have worked with a full range of children with disabilities, including but not
limited to children with brain injuries, children with autism, children with
autistic spectrum disorders, (Retts Syndrome, Asperger Syndrome, and PDD-NOS),
students with Down Syndrome, speech and language impaired students, emotionally
impaired students, students effected by mental retardation and related
developmental disabilities, students with physical handicaps in need of accommodations,
students designated as "other health impaired, students with visual
impairments, students with hearing impairments, students with hearing and visual
impairments, students with multiple disabilities, students with learning
disabilities, students with attention deficit disorder, (ADHD and ADD), and
students with neurological syndromes such as Tourette Syndrome that prevent
learning. The law that concerns a disabled child’s right to a free and appropriate education is complex. I believe that we can help navigate the labyrinth of special education law.
